Money and ignorance...corrupting sacred ceremonies!

Authorities puzzled by deaths at Sedona-area sweat lodge

When I first read the headline of this story, I was shocked and scared. As I researched it more - I took a deep breath of relief when I discovered it was at a resort, people paid money to attend it, and it was ran by a self-help guru and inspirational speaker, James Arthur Ray who is President and CEO of his own multi-million dollar corporation.

My prayers are with the families dealing with this tragedy, but I can't help to wonder...what the hell are these people thinking?! This is disrepectful and dangerous. The best quote in the article was given by Jennifer Gentry, "In my opinion, it's a sacred ceremony," she said. "You shouldn't sell it, and you shouldn't have that many people in it."

What are your thoughts?

  1. I agree that Native American traditions should be conducted by those who have the proper teachings. The outside world sees us so blindly, as graceful-spriritual-beautiful people but do not always find it in their nature to respect us similarly. Instead, most times in ignorance, outsiders continue to expoit our culture and traditions. This is most sad because the guy charged for it...are churches going to charge participation fees soon? Our sweats are a cleansing so we may be clean and pure to continue our lifes journey...what the guy has going is just a crude outdoor spa where he can take advantage of our culture and add to his millionaire savings & self promotion. If he is truly spiritual, why doesn't he be respectful?

  2. Wal-Mart meets God.
The lodges are ours for many reasons, outlawed for years, kept in the hearts of many, not understood by the infidels. The lodges are not connected to the evil of money and for good reason.
This guy James Arthur Ray is an example of the childish greed of the white-man, stunted man from a stunted culture. The white-men need help in finding humility.
